Isaiah 62:6 (ESV), "On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the LORD in remembrance, take no rest."
As I read this passage of Scripture, the relevance of it sprung at me. What I mean is that before the fall of Israel God set watchmen on the walls to proclaim the Word of the Lord. He said of them, that all day and all night they would never be silent. And also that those who are to put the Lord in remembrance should not take rest.
What I see here is very relevant in that it speaks of a diligent and disciplined servant of God. They were diligently doing what God had called them to do. But something more comes out of the phrase here along with this.
Look at the word here for remember. I picture here a person who is called by God to intercede in prayer for their nation and for their people. Notice the people in this context were the people of God. And they were called to take no rest in their intercessions and prayers. And the word for remember is also really interesting, for it holds within the definition the very diligence we speak of. It simply meant to call to mind in such a way as to affect present feeling, thought, or action. Wow! This is powerful! Do your remembrances and prayers come before the King of Heaven in this way? With boldness and diligence and taking no rest. I see a need today for the people of God to reach into heaven with boldness and understand the Word of the Lord so that when they too come before Him in this way it will change and alter their feeling, thought, and provoke action in such a way that it moves them to live in a way that gives no rest but declares and lives fully the will of the Lord.
Also, in this context, we see that the watchmen were set on the walls to give the Lord no rest until He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth. Now, this is also of high importance and even prophetic in many ways to the times we are living in and we should be praying always as the Scriptures say in Psalm 122:6, "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem."
But also note the principle laid out in Scripture as mentioned before about diligence and discipline in giving the Lord no rest. It reminds me of the man asking a friend at midnight for a loaf of bread, spoken of in Luke 11:8 (ESV), "I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs." The word for impudence actually means shameless persistence and relates to carrying out God's plan with a boldness that is shameless.
Do our lives resemble this type of disciplined and diligent prayer life as the watchmen that were called to give the Lord no rest? And do we come to God with a boldness that will not be turned away like this man in the parable in Luke 11:8?
